Fall is on it’s way and with that many of us will be raking leaves and cutting back plants to get ready for the snow. My tip this week has to do with the tool pictured above. Hedge trimmers are my go-to implement for cutting back perennials. Two or three clips from these guys and the job is done. You can see the results in the picture below.
When the kids were living at home we would have a fall clean-up day and in about an hour everything was cut back. Now, without my worker bees, I’ll do it bit by bit with my trusty hedge trimmers which of course have been used for years.
Another tip I’d like to share speeds up getting the leaves off your lawn. You do need access to a trailer or pick-up truck for this method and you’ll need a place to dump your leaves. Our county has a leaf dump which fits the bill for us. First, rake your leaves onto a tarp or for even quicker results, use a lawn sweeper to gather the leaves and then rake them onto a tarp. Next, pick up the four corners of the tarp, carry it to your trailer or truck and dump them in. Depending on how many leaves you have, you’ll want to smash them down periodically just like you do when you bag them. When your trailer or truck is full, secure a tarp on top of the leaves and take them to the dump.
